Purchasing an Accordian?

I have had a lot of requests asking me about my make and model of accordian by those of you who like the sound of mine or the accordian sound on Amelie, so I thought I would answer them all here for everyone. Firstly, I play an "Allodi" accordian, and actually this is really because there is not much choice here in England and they have a large shop full of high quality Accordians in London - however - since purchasing the instrument I have actually had the sound of it altered by a technician as the sound was too 'bright' - whereas I wanted it to be more 'bittersweet'.

You see, the tuning of an accordian is achieved through 'musette', where two or more sets of reeds are tuned slightly off pitch from each other. The smaller the musette, the more bittersweet and wistful the sound. Larger musettes will give you that brash tango sound you can hear on most italian accordian music. If you like my sound, or the sound from Amelie, you really want one voice setting with a very small musette, as heard here:

...and one voice setting with a slightly larger musette (still small in comparison to true Musette) as heard here:

On the bass side, you will find that Accordians come with a different number of bass buttons - my model is a 96 bass, which is plenty enough for me. Finally - women's models are generally a little smaller - I actually began learning on a women's model without knowing it was one, before purchasing my Allodi.

Hope this helps everyone in their quest for the right instrument.

- Dave

Did you learn La Noyee by ear, too ?

Or can you play it from sheets ?
I thought it was easier to play accordian if you can play the piano too, or am I making a mistake ?

Hi.
I just discovered you on youtube and think you are so very talented and I very much appreciate your appreciation for Yann Tiersen.

Have you seen the film Goodbye Lenin? The score is so moving. It would be amazing to see your version of Teirsen's Summer 87 from the film.

cheers!

Hi Dave, I just fell upon you today via youtube. Exquisite playing! I have always had a secret crush on the piano accordian..not to mention Yann Tiersen's, music of which you play both beautifully, and I can see you are going to be a bit of an addiction for me! I will eagerly keep an eye out for your own stuff. I am a contemporary dancer, and have always had a bit of a fantasy about creating a work for dancers and live accordian, so when I am rich maybe I will commission you to right me a piece ; )
Many many thanks.

Hi Dave, a couple of questions. You mention your confusion about what type of accordion you originally started with, but when did you start playing accordion, and what had you played before then??

Also, what shop was it in London that you went to. There used to be one near me in London as I am in Kilburn? I think it was called accordions of London - not sure if it is still there, but I am toying with the idea of learning. (As I was 14 years ago when my uncle was encouraging me);)

Not to be cliché, but the music you play is really nice. Probably like a lot of people who have listened to you on youtube, I found your video by looking for the music from Amelie. And no lie, I couldn’t figure out if you were Yann Teirsen or not, your playing sounds identical, too add most of your videos are named Yann Teirsen – Name of song. The emotion that I can hear in your songs is really a breath of fresh air. I hope all of these comments don’t go to your head, no one needs another cocky musician, but I also hope you make an album. If you do I’ll try to find it over here.

All the best, from Canada.

Oh, do you do any shows in mainland Europe? I ask because I doubt you’ll be coming to Canada any time soon, and I’ll be visiting a friend in Holland for the summer.

I´m not a musician, i don´t know much about piano or accordion, but i enjoy your music so much, especially "our story"... because it brings me peace, and when I listen to it, reminds me a lot of things, from my past, my life...it´s so spontaneous, so full of emotions, that transports me to an other universe, just like Yann Tersien or Astor Piazzolla (Tango/accordion/piano).
I´m a fashion designer, and that song was an inspiration to me.
Keep playing with your soul, just like you do.

Dein Klavierspiel ist beeindruckend.
Hast du eigene Sachen auf CD oder Covers von Yann Thiersen?Bekommt man die CD von dir im Handel?
Die Wahl der Musik ist genial!

There is no such thing as a 'women's accordion'. There are big accordions and small accordions, there aren't 'women-sized' sizes of accordions. Sizes are the same for women and men.

Hello Dave. You inspired me to dust off my accordion that's been sitting in the closet for years, after a teacher told me it'd take me 10 years to learn to play a French tango! I wish to learn the Amelie theme song, but could only figure the bass by listening. Any chance you'd know where to find the sheet for the keys or if you could write them down for me? Thanks a lot. You rock.
