La Valse d'Amelie Piano - 172,384 views and counting!
YouTube, and all the people who have posted comments, or sent me messages, this is here because of you. So many of you have shown a great interest and belief in me, so many of you have said such wonderful things about my playing, so many of you share with me this one common love for the sheer beauty of Yann Tiersen's music.. how it touches us through shivers, like a gentle breath on skin... how it mourns to our hearts, like nothing save the tears of a child... wistful, innocent, true.
Fitting then, that I would like to start this journey with a thankyou, a big thankyou to all of you for your words of encouragement.. when I am performing, whether out at a gig or simply practising at home, I will hope that somehow I am playing for you.. the grateful listener. This beautiful music, these wondrous sounds, were not designed to fall on deaf ears. After spending so many hours learning these songs note-for-note and recording these videos, it is truly a joy to know that so many of you have enjoyed my accomplishments.
La Valse d'Amelie
After so many of your kind words, I feel confidence and a burning desire to create, to grasp in the dark with these fingers.. can I find a voice somewhere, half as perfect as the one I mimic? I only care to find out, and in my journey to seek the answers I will use this blog to keep anyone interested up to date with all my goings-on - original music samples, pictures of performances, and of course.....videos.
If you have any questions you would like me to answer please send them over and I will try and answer them here (click the link on the right or send an email to info@davethomasmusic.co.uk), but please remember, I don't use sheet music so I honestly can't help you in that department.
To start us off, here is a sample of the first Piano song I ever wrote, a few weeks after watching Amelie.
It's called The Narrator.

Hi Dave, I really enjoyed listening to the narrator, it is truly amazing! I can't wait to hear more from you in the future, especially some accordion pieces! ;)
Take Care!
you are too amazing for words. you're going to be a well-known musician in the future; no doubt in my mind.
Your song, "The Narrator", really sounds great :D , but you also play the guitar don't you, why don't you show us some cool guitar skills :P
Hey Dave, My name is Marie and I subscribe to your videos on YouTube. I watch you all the way from California and it's a shame you're so far away, otherwise I'd watch you play live! But you have the right attitude in creating this because we are out here for you, your supporters, that is. You're renditions of Yann Tiersen's music, at least to my ears, are just as perfect as his recordings. Keep it up, I love your dedication!
Hi Dave! Your song is really beautiful! Have you written the song down??? Can you send me the notes please? I want to play so well as you, but its unbeteable! So I want to play the same songs like you... Yann Tiersen makes a lot of great songs, but "The Narrator" is much better!!! Please, can you send me the notes of "The Narrator" at: nicemove.fidelity@hotmail.com Thanks ;-)
PS: I'm hoppening on more beautiful songs like "The Narrator" ;-)
Well, I watched all of your you tube videos, so i decided to come and check this out, and I have to say that you are not only a great musician but also a great writer. The way you describe Yann Tiersen's music, and the way you say thanks to all your fans is amazing. I hope that one day I'll have the privilige of seeing you play. It's a pleasure, a delight to listen to all your performances.
Or can you make a Video plz? ;-)

Hi Dave! It's Yoh!
I didn't know that I can post you without having an account!
Last night I sent you an email, hope you've read it.
I can only say the same things everyone told you before... I admire you, really!!
Take care and keep writing your own music.
If I travel when I finish my career, maybe I'll found you in some great event!
Beautiful song.
You once had a video up about the hardship you've faced as a musician. It was sad to see, but it showed me, how dedicated you are to music. Thank you for that, when I feel doubts in my mind about a future in music I think about that.
hiii Dave please i have one question
¿ What software do you use for the songs?, maybe is Transcribe or other please answer me
I want to follow you in the accordion way ; )

heya dave
just wondering whether you've had any formal music training? only you have a feel and emotion for the music that really shows
loved 'the narrator' by the way, it's great that you're writing your own stuff and u can really see the way that yann tiersen has influenced your personal style
i also play piano, and i guess you could say your dedication to the music has kinda inspired me to keep going. I know hours of hard work got you where you are
keep grasping!
I wish you'd post this on You tube. maybe a link to download it as well..
I met Yann Tiersen once, after his concert. It was really strange because I was buying a tshirt in the lobby of the concert place, n my sis, who was standing next to me, says 'hey isn't that him' and I totally didn't see him until she dragged me over to him, eventhough I know very well what he looks like. So I get his autograph on my concert ticket and he was even more shy than me. It was adorable, he seemed lovely. Anyway, I love how you play :) I'll keep watching you on YouTube.

Music is my life.
I act with it. I believe in it.
I just live with it. Every day.
I would like to say that I can live without it. But it's just not possible. I just wake up in the morning thinking piano, I walk thinking piano, I go to bed thinking piano. I'm just scared to see that my only reason to open my eyes in the morning is my piano.
I live of that. I live of music.
I can't controle myself when I listen to music, espeacilly Yann Tiersen. I just can't. I cry without nowing that I'm crying. Music is so pure.
I know it's going to hurt one time. I know it but I don't care.
With music, I juste don't have to play..
I live France. I discovered your videos on youtube two days ago.
It's amazing, really. I just love what you do, I close my eyes and I just listen and it really makes me something.
Thank you and bravo like we say here. I'll come back.
Ps: I'm just learning "smells like teen spirit" piano version.

I can't stop watching your videos. I've been living off of them for a week. Your playing has even brought me to tears. I am in love with your beautiful covers songs of Yann Tiersen. I wish to watch you play in person one day. I have a feeling I'll be hearing your name. You are wonderful.
Please make more videos, I would love to hear more of you.
You are truly talented and an inspiration to many ameteur intrumentalists, I am sure.
You should definetely compose more songs, for I love 'the narrator'.
Keep up the great work Dave.
Hi Dave, that's a beautiful song. I'm sure you'll make your way. Keep it on!

"The narrator" is amazing! I love it.
I can't describe it in words, I'm totally speechless after listening to it.
Quel talent!
Hi from Viet Nam (pretty far away) :)
To be completely honest, that was one of the most beautiful pieces of music i have ever heard.
truely inspired. you are the most talented musician i've seen in a long time, and i hope you get the fame you deserve.
yann tiersen is amazing also :)
my only problem is that i want the narrator on my mp3. *_*
make it downloadable :)
your simply breathtaking in every way.
Hello Dave!
I'm Maggie and I'm French (so I don't speak English very well...)
I'm 15.
When I heard you in youtube, I was hanging around.
I do love your way to learn a song (listening and playing).
I play the piano too, but I'm not able to do that for all the songs from Yann Tiersen. (I often need the sheets music).
My favourite post from you in youtube is La Plage. I had the sensation you played it with your guts.
I listened to your song, the Narrator. In my eyes it's a very beautiful song, and I really hope you will show another creation. You are a big artist.
Take care of your talent.
Thank you for your playings.
Bye bye.
I love the way you place all of your heart and sentiment to every note. Because you a player by ear, rather than sheet, the interpretation you place on to the notes truly enhances the purspose of music.. i wish you the very best, keep following your heart and it will take you where you belong
Andrea, Houston
Hi Dave,
I love your playing! I just discovered you today on youtube.
Your first piano song The Narrator is so beautifull, I closed my eyes while listening and it totally moved me, I felt every note, I got tears in my eyes.
Keep up this good work please!!
It amazes me how you learned to play, what a patience and talent!
Love from Rotterdam,
Elseline
hey dave, i really like this piece, and i watched all of your videos on youtube. you are amazing~keep it up!
good luck and best wishes from canada!
Hey Dave,
I am so falling in love with you playing that music!
I painted a picture last week with you playing for me (felt like live) on the background. It was so inspirering to me.
I really adore the way you play Yann Tiersen. I think it's looks so fragile and pure, so beautifull. It sounds like water or something, I can't explain it, I love it (well, I think you get that part by now.. Sorry..)
Please keep posting new stuff on youtube, I think I'm addicted.
Love from Rotterdam, the Netherlands
Elseline
PS. How's your new home? Hope you have a nice place to play your music. My keyboard stands in front of the window.
horsejumper4ever again....and the Narrator.....is absolutely incredible........it's amazing that someone could actually compose that!
That was fantastic...........I can not wait to hear another work composed by you!
Hello, my name is Marine. I'm 15 and I come to France. My favourite story is... Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain, of course !
I watched you on YouTube, and I'm impressed by your talent. I wish I played as good as you ! For moment I just can play guitar, it's not very adapted to Tiersen. But when I saw musicians like you, I want absolutely to can play piano, accordeon, and many others instruments.
You are a great man. For play music like that, you can't be bloody stupid, and that's why I know you're a fantastic guy !
Good luck in your life and in music,
Marine.
PS : Sorry, my English isn't very good ! :)
Men like you make always me cry...
Remember of that.
You are a creative genius.
Gracias
hey dave!

I may have said to much and for that I am truly sorry, but as you can tell, this bearded old-timer (84) can still feel sensual, electric passion burning deep within. Here's to you, Accordion King! x

There's something so increadibly sad in Yann Tiersen's work, and you somehow know how to capture it, make me feel - I know I'm not capable of doing that so you have all my respect. I loved your own song too.

Then came here and i heard "Narrator", it was espectacular!, i play keyborad but not professional like you, i just studied 1 year cause i play by ear, things i hear i go to my organ and play with chord and all, so while i was listening "narrator" i was playing in my keyboard with strings doing the chord, hahaha very orchestral, well all of this is to sending my grettings and to salute to you you are a very talented guy and i´m glad to be one more in the world to listen the magic of your playings. Kisses, Mar.
Tijuana,México.
your hands make poetry...
hi Dave, i hope to be the first Aussie commenting you, but im too lazy to read through all the comments to find out if i really am so i'll say something obscure like that i hope to be the first Aussie who has commented you and that can stand and balance on gym balls, a true party skill that takes quite dedication. Anyhow your playing is quite amazing, which is a true understatement, because your playing in Amarsome, amarsome being amazing and awesome combined. Yes yes please release an album and i hope that some day you could travel here to Australia to play, that would be amarsome. Keep up the great playing.
Love from Australia
Lani

Salut, Dave!
I was listening to 'The Narrator' and even though it got stuck at 2:40, i listened to it over and over. I'm a writer and listening to your song, it's like a story is writing itself out in my head. Imagine my pain not being able to listen to the rest of the song. Incredible composition. I'd definitely buy your CD if you had one.
Cheers!
